Securing your device online
- Ensure you have up-to-date Anti-Virus software installed and your Firewall is enabled.
- Keep your Operating System (eg. Windows/OS X) up to date. Updates can fix any identified security issues.
- Check that any site requiring payment, uses HTTPS. This means all information is secured. Look for the green padlock:
- Ensure your passwords do not use common words and contain a mixture of upper and lower case letters, as well as numbers.
- Avoid using the same password for different websites.
- Download from trusted sources and always check the URL is what you expect.
- Keep up to date with the regular behaviour of the companies that you interact with. For example, your bank will never request login or account details via email. If you are unsure, contact the company directly to check.
- Update your Internet browser. Updates can introduce better protection from attacks.
- Share personal, bank account details, or login credentials with anyone.
- Open or download content from ‘pop-ups’ which take you away from the page you intended to visit.
- Open any suspicious files or programs that you may have downloaded accidentally.
- Download or open attachments from ‘phishing’ or ‘spam’ emails without carefully examining what they are and who they are from. These files are often in .zip or .exe format.
